Full catcher’s gear is not required to perform the Exchange Catcher Drill. The drill can be done with a mini glove a real glove. The point of this drill is to perform repetitions of transfer motions. This builds muscle memory of transferring. The catcher is going to catch the ball, turn the glove, bring it to the slot, get a good grip on the ball, and bring the arm back for throwing.
The catcher can perform this drill dry, without actually catching a ball. Get into catching position and perform the transfer motion. For best results, practice the transfer motion at different catch locations. Make sure that you are practicing a direct line transfer position.
The difficulty of this drill can be increased by using a partner or coach. The coach will bounce balls to the catcher in different locations. The catcher should practice the same transfer motions upon catching.
