The 6 Cone Catcher Drill is a great drill for getting the catcher moving and learning to absorb the ball. This drill is done dry with no ball, but the catcher needs to be wearing leg guards.
To set up for this drill, 6 cones or markers are placed in front of the catcher in a circle. The catcher will start in ready position and will practice making blocks around the circle of cones. The glove goes first, the body gets behind, the ball is absorbed, and then the player pops up into recovery position. The catcher will repeat the sequence in front of the next cone. Once the player makes it all the way around the 6 cones, they should restart going the opposite direction.
This drill can be performed alone or with a coach.
