WHIP Calculator

WHIP measures how many baserunners a pitcher allows per inning via walks and hits. Lower is better — it's one of the cleanest reads on command.

WHIP

IP
Walks + hits per inning pitched
Formula

WHIP = (BB + H) ÷ IP

WHIP counts only walks and hits — hit-by-pitch and errors don't count as baserunners here. Tiers are MLB rules of thumb. Youth and high school numbers run much higher and aren't directly comparable.

How it works

WHIP = (walks + hits) ÷ innings pitched. Innings use baseball notation, so 6.2 is 6⅔. It isolates the two most common ways to put runners on and ignores how they got home, making it a good companion to ERA.

Worked example

A pitcher with 20 walks and 58 hits allowed over 68⅓ innings has a WHIP of (20 + 58) ÷ 68.333 = 1.14.
